First graders explored the worlds of collage and printmaking through collagraph printing. Building upon a theme of collage, as they read books by Lois Elhert, a collage artists and writer. Some of the books that First graders read by Lois Elhert included Hands, RRRalph, Leaf man and Boo! to You. She also illustrated Chicka Chicka Boom Boom! Ask your student to tell you about their art!
First grade artists delved into the world of clay and 3D art. After discussing and learning about different kinds of critters, real and imaginary, First graders designed their own critter in a 2D format. Then they explored transforming that 2D image into a 3D object with play-dough. They were given some hints on how to keep their play-dough objects from falling apart- techniques like "scratch and attach" and not letting it get too dry- these tips would transfer to their clay building. Once their critter was built in clay, they discovered how to make paper into a three dimensional area where their critter could reside. First graders read the book Welcome Home Bear, by Il Sung Na to begin their search for the perfect habitat for their critter. Some First graders discovered how to incorporate other 3D objects (made of paper) into their habitats. Check out the gallery for videos of the process.
